Sony Corporation hints Touch Screen PSP on the Way!

Sony Corporation’s PlayStation might be in for a significant makeover.

Communication with The New York Times yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai said that the future PSP might show off both a touch screen and traditional controls to present casual and hard-core gamers the prospect to play titles in a manner they like.

"Depending on the sport, there are ones where you'll be able to play perfectly well with a touch panel," Hirai told The Times. "But you'll undoubtedly be able to play immersive games better with physical buttons and pads. I believe there can be games where you will be able to use both in combination."

Hirai accepted that the portable gaming space is shifting, that might prompt Sony to supply over just physical controls. He told The Times that his company is "seeing folks that never had an interest in games be a part of the gaming population."

A key reason for that shift has been the fame of mobile apps, like Rovio's Angry Birds, that have fascinated smartphone users round the globe. Earlier this month, Rovio announced that Angry Birds has been downloaded 50 million times & it is played 200 million minutes day after day round the world.
But the recognition of smartphone-based games is nothing new.

Whether a touch screen will help advance PSP sales remains to be seen. However Hirai's comments appear to fall in line with previous reports claiming the PSP2 would show off both a touch screen and physical buttons. That whispered device is anticipated to strike store shelves at some point in 2011.
